요즘 시집에 푹 빠져있습니다. 이것저것 많이 읽고 있기는 한데 통 적지를 않으니 기억에 남는 것 같지 않네요. 최근에 읽은 시집 중에 가장 집중력있게 읽은 시집 중 하나가 <구두를 신고 잠이들었다>였습니다. 처음 읽을 때는 참 못알아먹겠다 싶기만 했는데 역시 텍스트를 사랑하라고 했던가요, 읽고 읽고 읽으니 어느정도 보이는 지점들이 있었습니다. 이것이 시집의 매력인 것 같네요. 각설하고 이야기를 풀어나가 볼까 합니다.

구두를 신고 잠이 들었다. 창비 시선임에도 이전의 표지들과 다르게 디자인 되어있습니다. 창비 시집이 쭉 꽂혀있는데 개중에서 눈에 확 들어오네요 ㅎㅎ
언젠가 돌아오는 회귀의 이야기
동물에게는 회귀본능이 있습니다. 회귀본능은 동물 특히 어류 따위가 태어난 곳에서 다른 곳으로 이동하여 성장한 뒤, 산란(産卵)을 위하여 태어난 곳으로 다시 되돌아오는 습성을 뜻합니다. 『구두를 신고 잠이 들었다』에서는 이런 회귀본능을 직접적으로 말하지 않습니다. 아이러니로 이루어진 언어를 회귀시키는 것이 『구두를 신고 잠이 들었다』의 화법입니다. 이것은 ‘빗자루로 맞고 그래도 결국에는 집으로 돌아오는 개 같은 이야기(「세헤라자데」)’이며 ‘태어났다 죽었다를 반복하며 천막 안에서만 살아있(「서커스 천막 안에서 」)’는 이야기 일 수 있으며 ‘말랐다 젖었다 써졌다 지워지며 아무 데도 닿지 않(「혼자있는 교실」)는 이야기이기도 합니다. 「가방이야기」를 중점으로 얘기해볼까 합니다.

이것은 가방에 관한 이야기 철없던 오빠가 돈과 옷과 장난감을 가득 채워 집을 나갔던 커다란 가방에 관한 이야기다 다시 돌아온 오빠를 아버지와 어머니는 흠씬 두들겨 팼지만 가방은 수척해진 모습으로 한쪽 구석에 서 있었다 지퍼를 열자 가방 속은 텅 비어 있었다 가방은 마루에서 다락으로 다락에서 창고로 옮겨졌고 어느새 오빠는 쾌활함을 되찾았다 다시 창고에서 가방을 꺼내온 건 아버지였다 냄새나는 지폐 뭉치들을 신문지로 싸서 가방에 담은 아버지는 어두운 새벽 집을 나섰다 아버지는 일주일 후 강물 위로 떠올랐지만 가방은 돌아오지 않았다. 우리들은 아버지의 따뜻함을 떠올리려 애썼고 가방 따윈 잊어버렸다 어머니는 시장에서 생선을 팔았다 비린내가 나는 어머니의 양쪽 가슴을 나누어 만지며 밤마다 오빠와 나는 어른이 되는 꿈을 꾸었다 어느날 가방은 다시 우리집으로 돌아왔다 엄마가 들고 온 가방을 보고 우리는 소리쳤다 오빠가 들고 나갔던 가방이야 아빠가 들고 나갔던 가방이야 그 가방이야 엄마는 아니라고 했지만 우리는 쉽게 잠들지 못했다 엄마는 분명 저 가방을 들고 우릴 떠날거야 우리는 한밤중에 살금살금 일어나 가방 속으로 들어갔다 가방 속은 넓고 어두웠지만 온 집 안을 삼켰던 비린내는 나지 않았다 아이들이 사라졌어요 아침이 오자 엄마는 울면서 집 밖으로 뛰쳐나갔다 아무도 가방을 열지 않았다 우리를 가방속에서 꺼내주지 않았다 아이들이 사라졌어요 아이들이 사라졌어요 엄마는 우리를 찾느라 돌아오지 않았다 가방 속에서 우리는 자랐다 이야기를 먹고 자라났다 가방이 들려주는, 가방 속에 가득 차 있던 수많은 이야기들은 끝나지 않았다 잊혀진 이야기들이었다 그 이야기 속에는 우리도 있었다 누군가 지퍼를 열어준다면 이 밤이 끝날 텐데 하지만 아무도 우리를 기억해주지 않았다 우리가 얼마나 늙었는지 짐작조차 할 수 없었다 서로의 얼굴을 볼 수는 없었지만 맞잡은 두 손은 언제부턴가 파르르 떨리고 있었다 우리가 이미 오래전에 죽었다고 느꼈을 때 누군가 지퍼를 열었다 엄마였다 우리는 울면서 엄마에게 매달렸다 엄마는 노망난 늙은이들이라며 경찰서에 신고전화를 했다 우리와 함께 집에서 쫓겨난 것은 가방이었다 우리는 눈 내리는 밤 골목에서 가방과 함께 서 있었다 눈에 보이지만 유령이 된 것 같았다 차가운 눈이 조금씩 우리 위로 쌓였다 우리는 다시 가방 속으로 들어갔다 잡은 손을 놓지 않았다 여기가 가방 속이라니 이렇게 따뜻한데 말이야
「가방이야기」에서 주목해야할 것은 ‘가방’에 대한 감정입니다. 가방은 처음에 유랑의 도구로써 존재합니다. ‘철없던 오빠가 돈과 옷과 장난감을 가득 채워 집을 나갔던 커다란 가방’이며 ‘냄새나는 지폐 뭉치들을 신문지로 싸서 가방에 담은 아버지는 어두운 새벽 집을 나’서기도 했습니다. 이런 유랑의 ‘가방’이 두려움의 존재가 되는 것은 ‘가방은 다시 우리집으로 돌아왔’을 때 입니다. 아버지와 오빠의 유랑, 그것이 엄마에게까지 전이되는 것을 두려워합니다. 그런 두려움을 ‘가방’과 동화되는 것으로 해소하려고 합니다. ‘우리는 한밤중에 살금살금 일어나 가방 속으로 들어갔’습니다. ‘엄마는 우리를 찾느라 돌아오지 않았’고 ‘가방 속에서 우리는 자랐다 이야기를 먹고 자라났’습니다. 우리는 ‘가방’과 함께 자라면서 동화됩니다. 가방에서 나가고 싶은 마음을 갖지만 아무도 그들을 꺼내주지 않습니다. ‘오래전에 죽었다고 느꼈을 때’가 돼서야 지퍼가 열립니다. 하지만 그들이 바라던 엄마는 있지 않았습니다. ‘우리와 함께 집에서 쫓겨난 것은 가방이었다’ 그들은 가방과 함께 쫓겨납니다. 그들은 두려움의 존재였던 ‘가방’에 다시 들어갑니다. ‘가방’은 이미 두려운 존재가 아니었고 ‘우리는 다시 가방 속으로 들어갔다 잡은 손을 놓지 않았습니다 여기가 가방 속이라니 이렇게 따뜻한데 말이야’ 그들은 다시 들어간 가방에 편안함을 느낍니다. 두려움의 감정이었던 ‘가방’이 연어처럼 알을 갖고 편안함의 감정으로 돌아오는 것, 그것은 회귀본능에서 비롯되는 것입니다.
「가방이야기」에서 회귀는 서사로써도 나타납니다. 아버지의 죽음과 ‘비린내(생선 비릿내와 창녀의 이미지 두 가지를 가진 시어)’를 풍기며 일을 하는 어머니는 가정의 와해를 보여줍니다. 이런 와해된 가정은 ‘가방’이라는 새로운 집으로 환원합니다. 이것도 와해에서 편안함이 잉태된다는 것에서 앞의 이야기와 상통합니다.
회귀의 이미지는 약간 다른 화법으로 다른 시에서도 나타납니다. 아름다움이 모든 것을 태우는 것으로 그치지 않고 아름다움이 그 자체만으로도 존재하는「아름다운 불」 죽은 그레텔부인을 다시 깨어나게 해 고통의 노래를 부르게 하는, 머더구스의 라임으로 회귀를 설명한 「누가 그레텔 부인을 죽였나」백년의 잠과 하루의 깨어남을 반복하는 거인 이야기인 「Lullaby」등 『구두를 신고 잠이 들었다』에는 회귀의 이야기가 반복적으로 등장합니다. 표제작인 「구두를 신고 잠이 들었다」에서는 벗지 않고 계속해서 신어가는 구두의 이미지가 산란의 이미지와 닮아있습니다.
강성은 시인의 시를 보면 자폐아적 상상력을 느낄 수 있습니다. 끊임없이 번복되는 말, 언어들에서 그런 상상력이 느껴집니다. 이런 맥락에서 강성은 시인의 말을 인용하며 포스트 마치도록 하겠습니다.

이 세계를 무엇이라 부를까. 도처에서 번득이며 투명한 손으로 나를 잡아당기는, 결코 다다를 수 없어서 빛나고 아름다운 그곳을. 시라고 불러도 좋을까.
